Abstract

In this paper is analysed what I calla “naturalistic turn” in Averroes’ philosophy. I examined the causes that led to it, i.e. problems that Averroes attempted to solve within his “Aristotelianism”, as well as the originality of his thought. By the term “naturalistic turn” I meant to describe a rather radical twist in history of philosophy which was initiate by Averroes. This twist consists in his emphasis of philosophy of nature as demonstratively the most reliable science, contrary to his predecessors who considered this place strictly reserve for metaphysics. Averroes’idea culminated with the thesis that philosophy reflects positive knowledge that is based on the natural sciences, and that every attempt to establish metaphysics independently from the philosophy of nature results with a closed tautological system that has no external meaning, and that is therefore bound to failure.
